My experience at Airbnb transformed how I would think about my career, the sharing economy and opened a new door into the hospitality industry.
In my former life, I had been an un-employed electrical engineer, a world traveler, a movie-set extra, a luxury real estate agent, a hotel construction project manager. Through an amazing hiring process, and a lot of luck, I was chosen to lead market development for Airbnb in Indonesia back in 2012.
Hosts needed something more than just bookings to keep them motivated. We created host award programs to publicly commend hosts for the most incredible reviews. It was like the Academy Awards nights of Airbnb in Bali.
Airbnb is a two sided market-place. There's two missions. One is to get more hosts. The other was to get more travelers. In Indonesia, the largest market for travelers was in Jakarta. So our programs worked with key influencers to help new travelers feel confidant about using Airbnb.
My incredible colleagues at Airbnb were a second family. We had all moved to Singapore to participate in this incredible transformation in the hospitality industry. Many of them have gone on to create their own startups, VC funds and online enterprises. I'm so grateful for having the chance to work with them.
My first family. My wife, far right, is from Bali, and is where I have been living since 2005. Our daughter Eka enjoyed the numerous hosting events we setup at Airbnb and helped decorate this experiential Moroccan Tent at the Bali Spirit Festival.
